About Marcus

I offer a range of tools and approaches to help you to feel more happy relaxed and confident, and to let go of  old ways of being and relating which are no longer helpful to you. I have an Advanced Diploma in Emotional Therapeutic Counselling, which is a humanistic, person-centred therapy. It can help with a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship and communication issues, anger, abuse, and trauma. I am also trained in Body Listening, which is a neo-Reichian body- based approach, with Tim Brown at the Brighton School of Embodied Therapy. I am also a qualified Alexander Technique teacher, and teach a therapeutic dance practice called Dance of Awareness.

I am accredited through the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society, which is regulated by the Professional Standards Authority, and am fully insured.

By far the most important element in successful therapy is the quality of relationship between client and counsellor. I believe that when we feel safe, accepted and allowed to be ourselves it is natural for us to start to orientate towards well-being and growth. I aim to treat you with understanding and respect, to meet you where you are, and to be authentic, present and empathic. I undertake to self-reflect, to be honest if I make a mistake, and to act responsibly and ethically at all times. I hope to create a space in which you can unfold, explore, grow and let go of what no longer serves you, as feels right to you.

When I first met Marcus I was in a traumatised state from sexual abuse when I was a child. I spent a year in therapy with him and every Tuesday was one more step towards healing. He always made me feel safe and let me set the pace. In the midst of the worst state of anguish he also had the uncanny ability to lighten the intensity and sometimes, surprisingly, could make me laugh before I left the session. He walked alongside me in ways that surprised and encouraged me. Most of all, he is very sensitive and challenged me to be my most courageous self — but ‘held my hand’ when I felt unable to do it alone. It was worth every bit of courage I had to muster. Getting better is the prize.

Art and Creativity

Therapy is (or at least should be!) a creative endeavour, and creativity has always been a central part of my life — both in my work and beyond. Among other things I am a musician and have made music in one form or another for as long as I can remember. I have made and designed fine furniture, and did so for a living for several years. I have been involved professionally with graphic design and book production. I owned and published a high quality poetry magazine, and am a published poet. I also love dancing and have been involved with various therapeutic dance practices for over ten years. I hope that the breadth of things I have explored, thought about, and worked with in my life bring a richness and depth of perspective to my work.

I am a qualified and experienced dance of awareness teacher. In addition to my therapy training I have a degree in music, a masters degree in Myth and Cosmology, and a post-graduate qualification in Adult Education and Training.

Special areas of interest

I work with a wide range of clients and issues, and have a particular interest in working with trauma, high sensitivity (Highly Sensitive People/HSP), introverts and being happily introverted, shyness, confidence and low-self esteem.
